The abuse of children and adolescents by priests of the Roman Catholic
church, the attempt to cover-up these crimes and the chicanery of the
hierarchy whenever their contrivances to hide the truth is exposed is a
scandal that is world-wide in its extent. On this topic, the US
newspaper, “The Boston Globe,” has served the cause of truth as well as
any secular organisation may.
Visit their site and see the special articles on this distressing
matter. Its list of articles is constantly upgraded.
A year of scandal
An interactive timeline of the developing church crisis, featuring photos and audio.
BBC Northern Ireland's "Sunday Sequence" programme on March 25th included an item on the 50th anniversary of the Free Presbyterian Church of Ulster. It comprised a reporter's view of the Free Presbyterian Church and a discussion by a panel of guests. They were Professor Robert McCallum of the Reformed Presbyterian Church, Ed Maloney, a journalist, and Rev. Ivan Foster, a Free Presbyterian minister for over 35 years.

“The problem of sin in the church”
No. 1 Its undeniable presence.
It is necessary for us to establish first of all just what sin is.
There are almost as many opinions on this matter as there are people on this planet! One man’s sin is another man’s pleasure!
|
|
“The problem of sin in the church”
No. 2. The believer’s required response.
Sin is of such a nature that it cannot be concealed, at least not for very long. Nature helps us understand this truth when we consider the manifesting of sickness through the symptoms associated with it.
|
|
“The problem of sin in the church”
No 3, (part 1). The all too common response of the Christian.
“It is reported commonly that there is fornication among you, and such fornication as is not so much as named among the Gentiles, that one should have his father’s wife. And ye are puffed up, and have not rather mourned, that he that hath done this deed might be taken away from among you,” 1 Cor 5:1-2.

|
“The problem of sin in the church”
No 3. (part 2). The all-too common response of the Christian.
As we continue our examination of why the Corinthians treated the sin that had come into the church in the manner that they did, we build upon last week's study where we saw that pride was the underlying cause. In their state of spiritual decline, they viewed the gross acts of immorality referred to in our text as something natural and acceptable.
Today we continue with the consideration of two more points:
|
|
“The Problem of Sin in the Church”
No. 4 (part 1) - “The dire consequences” “Israel hath sinned, and they have also transgressed my covenant which I commanded them: for they have even taken of the accursed thing, and have also stolen, and dissembled also, and they have put it even among their own stuff. Therefore the children of Israel could not stand before their enemies, but turned their backs before their enemies, because they were accursed: neither will I be with you any more, except ye destroy the accursed from among you,” Joshua 7:11-12.
|
|
“The Problem of Sin in the Church”
No. 4 (part 2) - “The dire consequences”
In our last study, we considered how that it is our duty to stand against our enemies.
1. We must face our enemies.
2. We must fight our enemies.
3. We must maintain war against them.
Today, we consider how that : WE CANNOT STAND WITHOUT THE LORD’S HELP!
“Therefore the children of Israel could not stand before their enemies, but turned their backs before their enemies, because they were accursed: neither will I be with you any more, except ye destroy the accursed from among you.”
|
|
“The Problem of Sin in the Church”
No. 4 (part 3) - “The dire consequences”
As we conclude this section of our overall consideration of the consequences of sin in the church we will ponder how: SIN WILL ROB US OF GOD'S PRESENCE AND HELP

“The Problem of Sin in the Church”
No. 5 (part 1) - “Discipline”
“For this cause left I thee in Crete, that thou shouldest set in order the things that are wanting, and ordain elders in every city, as I had appointed thee,” Titus 1:5. We start a new chapter in our study of “Sin in the Church”. As the human body has a built-in mechanism that swings into action as soon as the body comes under attack from anything that threatens its health, so the Lord, the Creator of the human body, has ordained a proper process by which the health and well-being of the Church is safeguarded.

“The Problem of Sin in the Church”
No. 5 (part 2) - “Discipline” “For this cause left I thee in Crete, that thou shouldest set in order the things that are wanting, and ordain elders in every city, as I had appointed thee,” Titus 1:5. We wish to take the study a little further today and concentrate upon the more practical aspects of DISCIPLINE IN THE CHURCH.
|
|
“The Problem of Sin in the Church”
No. 5 (part 3) - “Discipline”. In this study we wish to make clear the purpose of discipline.
One of the difficulties facing parents when they bring their children to a hospital for treatment is to calm their fears and persuade them that the treatment about to be received is for their good and not for their hurt.

Murder and blatant hypocrisy on display in Ulster
A number of articles in the secular press, both British and Irish, dealt with the recent murder of Paul Quinn from Cullyhanna, a republican stronghold in the notorious south Armagh.
The writers were universal in their view that this was the work of the IRA.

The faith of Dana - not a faith to be commended
“Beloved . . . . earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints,” Jude 1:3.
It has been widely reported that at a reception to launch a new book by the singer Dana, Dr Ian Paisley spoke of her as a "a woman of great faith and steel who had stood up for what she believed in, and added: "I'm glad to stand with her" (Belfast Telegraph, 7/11/07). He is also quoted in the same article as saying : "I hope that when everyone on this island reads this book I hope they ponder what it says."

Some comments on the speech of Lord Laird in which he named IRA leaders involved in Quinn murder
We preface what we have to say by the proviso, 'if Lord Laird's comments are true". I am fully inclined to believe that they are.
What he said in the House of Lord's on Monday, November 12th, reveals a situation that has been common in many areas of Ulster for the last 30 years!

Has the Free Presbyterian Church lost its stomach for the fight against idolatry and falsehood?
A article based upon the message preached on Lord’s Day evening, November 25th, 2007, by Rev Ivan Foster.
“And what shall I more say? for the time would fail me to tell of Gedeon, and of Barak, and of Samson, and of Jephthae; of David also, and Samuel, and of the prophets: who through faith subdued kingdoms, wrought righteousness, obtained promises, stopped the mouths of lions, quenched the violence of fire, escaped the edge of the sword, out of weakness were made strong, waxed valiant in fight, turned to flight the armies of the aliens,” Hebrews 11:32-34.

Newspapers allege Dr Paisley apologised for Free Presbyterian protest
An article was published on Saturday, 15th December '07 in the "Daily Mirror". A similar report appeared in "The Derry Journal" - (http://www.derryjournal.com/journal/Clergyman-hounded-out-of-Limavady.3598162.jp)

|
What Dr Paisley once said about Rev Armstrong & the Limavady protest
The following excerpts from “The Revivalist”, a monthly magazine edited by Dr Paisley, indicate clearly that if he apologised to Rev. David Armstrong, Dr Paisley has repudiated the stand that he and the Free Presbyterian Church took against apostasy since the inception of our church in 1951.
|
|
Is this when Rev David Armstrong met with Dr Paisley?
Pictures don't lie, they used to say. However, the adage is no longer absolute in this day of digital manipulation. They can tell the truth nevertheless and point to something that others would rather conceal and even give an important testimony in such a matter.

Interview with Ballymena priest who led in prayer at ecumenical service attended by Dr Paisley

Presbytery statement of rededication following the election of a new moderator
At a meeting of over 200 ministers and elders gathered in Dungannon on 18 January 2008 the General Presbytery of the Free Presbyterian Church of Ulster paid tribute to Dr Paisley and Dr John Douglas, both of whom were stepping down from official positions within the Presbytery.

Questions for the DUP on devolution of policing & justice - Jim Allister MEP
Particularly since the Dromore by-election, the DUP has been anxious to say they will not agree to the devolution of policing & justice by May. Among the reasons cited are the continuing existence of the IRA's Army Council, the Quinn murder etc.

|
A statement from Rev Ivan Foster on the stepping down of Dr Ian Paisley as First minister and leader of the DUP
In an interview on BBC Northern Ireland television in December 2006, I said that I thought that many Free Presbyterians would be broken-hearted at the prospect of Dr Paisley in coalition with Martin McGuinness.
Time has proved that statement to be true.

The cry of the merchants
Chief amongst the mourners who bewail the fall of Babylon, Antichrist's commercial and political capital, will be the merchants who grew rich through its business enterprises.
Here in Ulster, businessmen are far from weeping. Recently, a businessmen's association in Northern Ireland indicated that they thought Peter Robinson, the DUP Economics Minister in Stormont, was doing a good job. That report made me think of account of Babylon's fall in Revelation 18 and the weeping of the merchants.

Bible Verse of the Week

"And said, Naked came I out of my mother's womb, and naked shall I return thither: the LORD gave, and the LORD hath taken away; blessed be the name of the LORD. In all this Job sinned not, nor charged God foolishly."
